Psalm 14
April 6, 2025 Father, none of us like to be thought of as fools, nor would we ever say, “There is no God.” Yet, we need this psalm to remind us not to think too highly of ourselves. Give us ears to hear and soft hearts to truly understand its message. Slow us down so that we can listen, reflect, and allow it to shape us.
We acknowledge that none of us do good flawlessly. We often lack the wisdom and character to respond perfectly or even reasonably to others. We are not as familiar with your ways, or as God expectant as we should be. As we come before You today, we confess that, though we are all sojourners here, we have lived as if we were permanent residents. In doing so, we have acted more foolishly than we realize.
In recent weeks, David has been unpacking the stories of King Nebuchadnezzar and King Belshazzar. Through these stories, we see the personal consequences of kings who had wealth and prestige, yet lived in their own way, saying “no God,” and thus proving themselves to be fools.
As we reflect on these stories, help us recognize the subtle ways we too brush You aside, saying, “I don’t see God in this or that” or “I don’t need You, God.” Open our eyes to these moments and forgive us for our pride.
We admit that we lack the knowledge, perspective, and character to live well in our communities. Yet, Your Word reveals that there is a standard of goodness—one that You define. In Your infinite wisdom, You are compassionate and gracious, slow to anger, and abounding in loyal love and faithfulness. You grant understanding to those who genuinely seek You, and You listen to those who sincerely call You Lord. You stand with the generation of the righteous.
We pray for all of us to have the endurance to walk fully worthy of You. We ask for a spirit of wisdom, especially for those in life transitions or desiring change. We pray for strength to continue Your work in faith, particularly for our overseas ministry partners.
Father, You are great. You are good. Your holiness endures forever. Teach us and prepare us to reign with You for all eternity.
And as God’s people, we say, Amen.
